About paper eye

We went to paper museum at ohji, Tokyo in order to study about paper. And a staff informed us that the direction of the length and the width is on a newspaper from the way functioning at inside of the building. Even if I say the length and the width, it's the partial condition of the direction of the fiber, not vertical writing and paper both sides. The terrible number equals the length and the width, and that's made hard, and the slender fiber by which the one as paper is a raw material is made. But some has a lot of fiber for the length by the kind of paper and have a lot of sideways fiber conversely. For example I find out that there is a lot of fiber for the length so that a photograph(1) may show the occasion of the newspaper. When it's broken lengthwise in case of a newspaper, so it tends to break it straight smoothly, and when I try to tear it in the width, it doesn't rip well.
So we examined whether it was that the direction is also on paper besides the newspaper or it depended for the one of the paper fiber later, and that there is difference in the strength and the durability.

Experiment method

(1) 2 stands's clamps are added to the same height.
(2) The thread made circle is shown into the paper which would like to check the strength.
(3) The top and the bottom inserts the end in left and right of(2) by rubber respectively.
(4)(3) is fixed on a clamp.

(5) Every 20 grams and a sinker is being put on the thread, and the weight when paper broke, is measured.
It was every 5 seconds to take a sinker on, and we did. And It was done like the following figure by this experiment and the length and the width were classified.

Experimental result

Table 1 The length of the various paper and the strong difference by the side.
We found out that the durability changes by direction of the paper.
When I tried to cut it vertically to the direction of the paper, the durability was strong.

Consideration

I thought why the direction was on paper.
Newspaper: paper lengthwise, not because a newspaper was easy to break and it could be read compactly.
Toilet paper: The direction of the paper became lengthwise in the manufacturing process, and I thought I made sure that it'll break straight including a sewing machine eye sideways because it was difficult to cut beautifully successfully.
When understanding the direction of the paper, without using scissors in cut time and broken time, it's just creased tightly, and it may break well.
There may be also difference in the directions of the paper at the close place in these other ones. Since would everyone like to check it, too? May there be new discovery?
