メダカ
一般的なメダカは日本メダカと呼ばれています。かなり後ろに背びれがあります。体の色はダークブラウンがかっている灰色をして、南から北に広く住んでいる淡水魚です。
・ニホンメダカ
メダカの名前の由来は、大きな目が、頭部の上の方にあることにより、「目高」と呼ばれるようになりました。
小川または水路に生息していて、春から夏に卵を産みます。そして、夏から秋にプランクトンまたはボウフラを食べて、成長していきます。寿命は1〜1.5年ですが、人工的に育てれば、3〜5年生きられるようになります。
・ニホンメダカ以外のメダカ
野生のメダカから変異体でまれに体色が違うメダカがうまれます。
基本的な種類はヒメダカ（オレンジ色のメダカ）、白メダカ（白色のメダカ）、アオメダカ（青いメダカ）などがいます。また、 「光るメダカ」のように遺伝子操作をして生まれたメダカもいます。
