A Sudden Change in Meiji Period

Japan has seasons(of cource swelter in summer and cold in winter).Making rooms cool was the most important thing of Japanese traditional architecture. Why was that? The answer is very easy. Because we can have a warm by the fire in winter, and have a cool to remove "Fusuma" from the rooms. Therefore,it was possible to obtain the ventilation.

Japan raised national isolation in the end of Edo period. The construction of houses have changed as Japan adopt Western-style that.

1.The change of material

from natural material(like a wood) to synthetic material(like a reinforced-concrete).

2.The change of form

The room was divided one by one and had smaller windows.

These changes was unfavorable for living in Japan. Because these houses were unusually heat in summer. So people had to make artificial air-conditioning units in order to natural wind. We should make use of the goodness of traditional architecture.
