Pit-Dwellings

A pit-dwelling had a dug-out floor space about 50 centimeters below ground level, either circular with a diameter of about 5 meters, or square with rounded corners. Four to six wooden pillars were set into holesin the floor, connected at the top with beams. The beams supported roof rafters.

Many remains of pit-dwellings have been discovered, but the vast manority preserve only the hollowed-out pit and pillar holes, with virtually no trace of the wooden structure above. It is difficult to get a picture of pit-dwelling structuers from Jomon-period materials alone.
