Report on visiting a thermal electric station
|
I visited a thermal electric station in Yokohama on August 12th. To attend the afternoon course,I rode a bus at Tsurumi station at about two o'clock. It took twenty minutes to go. The land of the thermal electric station was huge, and the area was about 450 thousand square kilometers, which is 16-fold of the area of Yokohama stadium.

Before visiting the station,I went to the Twiny Theater,an information center. On the second floor there were "Energy Circus" that tells you a story about changing electrical energy to other types of energy, and "Factory" where you experience. I wish I could create a home page which children love very much. On the third floor, they displayed to learn how to generate the electricity. I could understand well. |

In the meantime,it is time for the tour. The first stop was the community hall.I watched two videos. The one was how a caveman made a fire and the other one was what happens if you are not able to use electricity at home for a few days. I felt very seriously because the family name of the people in the video was the same as mine.

After watching the movie, the next stop was the electric generatic facilities. I rode an electric car.The other party used a hybrid vehicle. |

I went to the upper level using the elevator, and found the model power generation plant. They explained an overview. At this moment, this plant use Liguid Natural gas(LNG),not oil. Because LNG gives us less SO2 and NO3 which are the cause of air pollution. Yokohama plant generates electricity not only by rotating the turbines using steam as the conventional thermal electrical plants, but also by rotating the turbines using the secondary steam made by heating water. |

I walked to the area where the turbines and the power generation existed. They were very large. There were four units, but one or two units were not working. Because they cannot store the generated electricity. |

As models, some sets including hand electrical generator and three electric bulbs. You can put on or put off the lights by the switch. The guide told us to wake a team of two persons. The one put any switch on or off. The other must rotate the hand generator so that the all bulbs keep the similar light level. It was more difficult than I expected. When the switch was on or off, the reaistance of the hand generator was modified. Therefore I could not keep the light level. I was so surprised, because Yokohama electric generation plant does control the electrical power to supply tens of thousands homes. |
|
The next stop was the control room on the lower level. (*Photoes were prohibited on this area.) I saw a small monitors on the desks and a large one on the front wall in the control room. The large monitor provides which machines are working and how much they are generating electricity. The employees were no more than ten.But they are doing a good job. I was surprised because such small number of people could control all machines.

Finally,I visited the twin tower, the symbol of Yokohama electric generating plant. The height of the twin tower is approximately 200m. The tower contains exhaust system. The smoke generated by burning fuel is cooled down and is out in the atmosphere. The tour was over's. |
