Naruhiko Higashikuni(Aug 17, 1945-Oct 9, 1945, 54 days, from Imperial family)
The first prime minister from the Imperial family.
He tried to revive Japan after WWII but resigned in 54 days (the shortest term ever) because of opposition to General Headquarter (a headquarter which occupied post-WWII Japan).

Kijuro Shidehara (Oct 9, 1945-May 22, 1946, 226 days, Independent)
The cabinet’s goals that were given from GHQ were
1. Allowing suffrage of female
2. Allowing labor unions
3. Abolishing control over children education
4. Abolishing laws that suppress citizens
5. Democratize economy.
They created a basis for the new constitution draft with GHQ.

Shigeru Yoshida (1st: May 22, 1946-May 24, 1947 2nd: Oct 15, 1948-Feb 16, 1949 3rd: Feb 16, 1949- Oct 30, 1952 4th: Oct 30, 1952-May 21, 1953 5th: May 21, 1953-December 10, 1954, 2716 days, Liberal Party nowadays Liberal Democratic Party)

The fourth longest terms as a prime minister.
The first cabinet successfully passed and proclaimed the new Constitution, even though leaving problems such as who to give sovereignty.

The cabinets after the second worked on conclude peace treaty and security treaty. GHQ established National Police Reserve (now known as Self Defense Force) because of social unrest like Korean War. The cabinet’s popularity dropped because voters thought the US-Japan Security Treaty might cause Japan to be involved with the war fought by America.


Tetsu Katayama (May 24, 1947-Mar 10, 1948, 292 days, Social Democratic Party Japan nowadays Social Democratic Party Japan)
The first prime minister from the Social Democratic Party Japan (SDPJ). GHQ who doesn’t want Japan to be conservative expected from this cabinet, but resigned because of the inflation in economy.

Hitoshi Ashida (Mar 10, 1948- Oct 15, 1948, 220 days, Social Democratic Party Japan)
A innovative cabinet formed mainly by SDPJ, but resigned with Showa Denko Scandal.

Ichiro Hatoyama (1st: Dec 10, 1954-Mar 19, 1955 2nd: Mar 19, 1955-Nov 22, 1955 3rd: Nov 22, 1955-Dec 23, 1956, 745 days, Democratic Party nowadays Liberal Democratic Party)
Established Democratic Party on November 24, and became its president to split Liberal Party led by Shigeru Yoshida. This caused Yoshida’s cabinet to collapse. Hatoyama’s cabinet successfully restored a diplomatic relationship between the USSR.
