Bismuth metal is an native element which has been know since ancient times for alchemy.
Its melting point is around 70℃ making it one of the few metals that melt in low temperature. The spiral, stair-stepped structure of bismuth crystals is the result of a higher growth rate around the outside edges than on the inside edges. The variations in the thickness of the oxide layer that forms on the surface of the crystal causes different wavelengths of light to interfere upon reflection, thus displaying a rainbow of colors.
It is also possible to make artificial bismuth crystals from bismuth metal. Bismuth metal is used for soldering iron when mixed with alloy, weights and glass alike lead, and for caps of fire sprinklers since it melts at a low temperature. |
