Copper
Chemical Formula Cu
Mohs Hardness 2.5-3
Specific gravity 8.9
Description Most copper is mined or extracted as copper sulfides from large open pit mines in porphyry copper deposits that contain 0.4 to 1.0% copper.

Its compounds are commonly encountered as copper(II) salts, which often impart blue or green colors to minerals such as azurite, malachite and turquoise and have been widely used historically as pigments.

Copper is a soft, malleable and ductile metal with very high thermal and electrical conductivity. A freshly exposed surface of pure copper has a reddish-orange color. It is used as a conductor of heat and electricity, as a building material, and as a constituent of various metal alloys.

The major applications of copper are in electrical wires, roofing and plumbing, and industrial machinery. Famous copper mines in Japan is Shizunai copper mine located in Hokkaido.
