尊王攘夷

天皇を尊び敬う思想（尊王論）と、 外国を日本から排除しようとする思想（攘夷論）を 結びつけたものを尊皇攘夷論という。

尊王論自体は、政府の支配の正当性を表すものであった。 しかし、外国との関係が深くなるにつれ、 攘夷論と結びつき、欧米の圧力に屈服し無理やり開国させられた政府を厳しく非難して、 実践的な政治革新思想となる。
