Emperor Shomu built Kokubunji for people's heart in the method of a conclusion, and the whole country by Buddhistic power. Therefore, the command which makes Great Buddha to Todaiji of the capital which takes the lead was given, and Great Buddha made from gilt bronze was completed in 752. Great Buddha which burns down and is existing in many buildings by war of 2 times is leaving the original portion to the parts of a plinth etc. after medieval times.

These lotus pedals that escaped the past two destruction by fires are the things still in the state at the time of Nara. On the right-hand side pillar, the hole through which people can pass exactly is vacant toward Great Buddha. This is said to be the same as the hole of the nose of Great Buddha, and is said "To be able to become fortunate if it passes through." The front door of a Hall of the Great Buddha is opened on August 15 or New Year's Eve, and can see the face of Great Buddha also from an inner gate.
