According to the European Capital of Innovation 2014 poll, Barcelona is a huge metropolis center with long tradition of industry and entrepreneurship. Barcelona's town council encourages international cooperation and strategic initiatives that look to the world and promote forward-looking businesses and public institutions, as well as scientific and technological ones.
The development of a smart city in Barcelona started more than 30 years ago when a string-like electric wire was installed to connect two cities. Today, the Barcelona Town Council uses public and private cooperation to promote environmental protection through transportation, shopping and street lighting. Barcelona has transformed itself into a suburban laboratory that oversees projects and services that make the city more open, efficient and environmentally friendly.
The innovation area known as 22 nd was chosen to house the Barcelona facility as a good fit for the Growth Smarter project. This multi-purpose area mixes vibrant residential, industrial and academic facilities. About 25% of the activity is on the Mediterranean coast. Solutions, including the introduction of electric vehicles and the installation of charging facilities, have been developed in the 22 nd lot, and the current building will be remodeled to create a lot with 0 real energy consumption. We are also introducing district heating and cooling.
Influence
The field trials in Barcelona consist of 10 renovated buildings covering a total area of 33110 square meters. In the end, the area's energy requirements were reduced by 2767 MWh/year as a result of the renovation. According to the SCIS calculation based on the energy consumption reduction plan and various emissions, the reduction of primary energy can be reduced by up to 5729 MWh/year, and the reduction of carbon dioxide is estimated to be 1610 tons/year.
