Interview
Dear Multicultural youth project
Kanagawa Prefecture
Q
What got you interested in Japanese learning guidance?

A
We started this activity because we wanted to provide information about proceeding to the next level of education and to share the information we experienced in fact to the international children just like us. Since the number of international children is small and the places they live is quite different, we consider there is only little information available for them. For example, when I had visited quite a number of university’s career counseling sessions before, I was only given explanations that omitted what the Japanese usually already know about, like explanations of what a university is,what a junior college is, and so on. However, for international children/people like me, it’s impossible to understand the Japanese system of entrance examination all of the sudden. Therefore, we made an article that explains and puts information regarding such things, so that anyone could see it and understand at any time. I have never thought that my experience is the correct answer, but I hope that they can find the one that suits them the most out of a lot of experiences and episodes collected on our website.

Q
If there was an international child in our same class, is there anything we should do?
A
In fact, I had an experience of being alone in class when I was in junior high school. Back then, I felt happy when they just spoke to me, so I think it would be great if you could speak to them by maybe starting with a greeting. However, I would like you to remember that it would be more good if you could talk regularly to them rather than just talking on that specific day. Since I felt lonely being alone at lunch time, I think it would be nice if you could care about them and talk when you find them being alone especially on free times, and talk slowly. The time that I felt the most happy was when my classmates around me rewrote the words on the black board into hiragana and taught just for me. They must have been very busy copying their notes too... I will never forget their kindness.

Q
On the occasion of connecting with the Board of Education and schools, what are the points you should care and improve about?

A
The way the nonprofit organization, schools, and the government carries out their activities are quite different. Nonprofit organizations can be involved with the children for a long time since they carry out the activity from the standpoint of the people involved, and also because they provide considerate support to have the government know about the issues. On the other hand, schools and governments can only be involved for a limited amount of time(only during the students are attending school) since they move depending on the rules.
