Neglected bicycles problem

As reasons not to use the existing bicycle parking space, there are opinions that there is no bicycle parking lot near the destination and there is an inconvenience that it is inconvenient to purchase the shops, and it is necessary to respond to the detailed needs. Regarding neglected bicycles, the Cabinet Office conducts a survey of actual conditions around the station every other year and issues a report. According to the report "Results of Survey on Neglected Bicycles and Others around the Station in FY2009", the number of bicycles left abandoned peaked at 988 thousand units in 1981 and then declined to 243 thousand units in 2009. Although it is 1/4 of the peak time, it is still in a condition that 240,000 bicycles are still left. Looking at the number of bicycles that can be parked, it increased from 598 thousand units in 1977 to 4,777 thousand units in 15 years, 7.3 times. It seems that the maintenance of the bicycle parking space has had a certain effect on reducing the number of bicycles left unattended, but in 2009 it is flat at 4,321 thousand, so it may be stagnating due to difficulties such as land acquisition.
