Familiar type of radiation
Observation
―Let's look at radiation using a fog chamber―
Fog chamber
We observed radiation using the "fog chamber" at a physics experiment room. A "fog chamber" is equipment for observing the radiation which is not visible. The inside of the container is filling with alcoholic steam, when the particles exposed to electricity pass, fog occurs, and the locus emerges white. The situation of the fog which occurs according to the electric charge and speed which each particle has changes.
Observation of alpha rays
If the source of alpha source (white portion of a photograph) is put in a fog chamber,we can observe the sign that alpha rays are radiately emitted centering on there.
Observation of natural radiation
・Alpha
It is the feature to make a thick short fog. Being observed by a fog chamber is mainly emitted
from the radon in the air.
・Beta rays
Because a beta ray (electron) is light, it is easy to be bent if other atoms are collided with.
Therefore, the locus which bent greatly repeatedly is observed in a fog chamber.
・Muon
The muon observed by a fog chamber leaves a straight long locus.
