Maruha Nichiro's Commitment and Philosophy
Under the group slogan "Bringing Delicious Happiness to the World," Maruha Nichiro's mission is to contribute to the enrichment of people's lives and happiness through the provision of genuine, safe, and healthy food. In the frozen foods business (including home-use, commercial use, and nursing care foods), the company is proposing high value-added products by combining its ability to procure stable raw materials with its product development and technological capabilities.
About Product Packaging
The Maruha Nichiro Group is working to save resources in product containers and packaging. In addition to reducing the weight of containers, this is expected to have various effects, such as reducing carbon dioxide emissions during distribution by reducing weight, and improving delivery efficiency by reducing the size of packaging.
In particular, thinning of packages and plastic trays is being strongly promoted. In 2020, the amount of plastic used could be reduced by 5.2 tons due to thinner packaging. In addition, the amount of plastic used in the film of bottled products has been reduced by about 7%.
About Products
The Maruha Nichiro Group is also engaged in the marine products business. The scope of this business is not limited to catching and nurturing fisheries, but also extends to fisheries trading.
However, the company does not sell seafood ingredients as frozen foods for home use. Instead, it sells boneless fillets of salmon, mackerel, and cod, as well as shrimp, scallops, clams, and other ingredients for commercial use.
About Distribution
Regarding the distribution of products, some products are distributed through the Maruha Nichiro Group's internal distribution network, while others are outsourced to other companies.
Initiatives to Address Food Loss
The Maruha Nichiro Group launched the Brand Action Creation Project in fiscal 2019. Among them, the "Gentler on the Earth Project" is an initiative to reduce food loss, called "From Throwing Away to GIFT," starting in fiscal 2020.
The main initiatives are
- Provide employees with discarded food produced within Maruha Nichiro that is still edible.
- Distribute original eco-bags made from fishing nets.
- Visualize the food loss within Maruha Nichilo.
- Propose and share recipes that make use of food loss.
These are just a few examples.
Prospects
The company will continue to develop products that meet the growing needs for shortening time and convenience, individual servings and small volume, and health consciousness.
