RFMOs

RFMOs is abbriation of "Tunas Regional Fisheries Management Organization", which is consisted five committees for for the protection of tuna, and committee are in charge of management of their own region of ocean or species, respectively.
Five RFMOs are following.


Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission: IATTC


・Establshed in 1947

・Charged on Pacific Ocean

・Headquarter: La Jolla, San Diego, US

・Management target species: genus Thunnus fishes

・Participants: US, Panama, Japan, and other 18 contries/regions

・Features: Scientists are membered in the secretariat and it enable management by sound science



International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas: ICCAT


・Established in 1966

・Charged on Atlantic Ocean

・Headquarter: Madrid, Spain

・Management target species: All tuna

・Participants: EU, US, Japan, South Africa, and other 45 countries/regions

・Features: Since scientists from member countries participate, it is difficult to obtain results when interests are involved. Also, since the number of scientists who can participate is determined by national strength, it is difficult to maintain fairness in discussions.



Western & Central Pacific Fisheries Commission: WCPFC


・Established in 2004

・Charged on Western and central Pacific Ocean

・Headquarter: Kolonia, Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia

・Management target species: tunas and other highly migratory fishes

・Participants: Australia, China, Japan, and other 23 countries/regions

・Features: Australia and New Zealand have influence over numerous South Pacific island nations, and have strong initiative in WCPFC



Indian Ocean Tuna Commission: IOTC


・Established in 1996

・Charged on Indian Ocean

・Headquarter: Victoria, Seychelles(an archipelagic country consisting of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean)

・Management target species: tunas

・Participants: Australia, Japan, China, and other 29 countries/regions

・Features: Many member countries are developing countries.


Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna: CCSBT


・Established in 1994年

・No specific ocean in charge

・Headquarter: Canberra, Australia

・Management target species: Southern Bluefin Tuna

・Participants: Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, South Africa, (Taiwan), (EU)

・Features: Becouse area of southern bluefin tuna inhabit is bound to wide range of high latitude of the southern hemisphere, this committee is not classified by ocean area.




There are many international efforts underway, and Japan is a member of all five International Tuna Management Committees.
I felt that fishery resources are protected by these organizations.
