Interview

We interviewed japanese famous professors of Kitazato University.

Tadashi Nozaki:He create the equipment enabling us to experiment radiation's character

Koji Ogawa:He is associate professor.

◆Derails about development of the generator

Hiki: Please give us details about development of the generator which we used for this experiment on a half-life.

Nozaki: This is generator.
I think the most important thing as education of science is experimentation. In especially high school, it is being disregarded because of the entrance examination for universities. It is the most important thing that many people have interest in radiation or radio activity.
For this, I think germanium/gallium generator suits to learn radiation and isotopes. This has already used for correction of PET and the best way is that a generator make easier and smaller, and distribute many places. I managed to make this machine.
I seem this accident in Fukushima is no space of science because of “safety myth of nuclear power plant” and “allergy to radiation”

◆About the radiation education

Hiki: Field of radiation are removed by “Yutori Kyouiku”, education without cramming. What do you think the ideal method of carrying out the radiation education from schoolchildren to high school students?

Nozaki: I think that is too little. Once, radiation and an atomic nucleus were topics. In the 1890s, it turned out that atoms are changed by nuclear disintegrations. Until then, we thought atoms are immortal and don’t change. Dangerous of radiation is recognized especially in Japan. So, I think, the education of radiation was insufficient.

Ogawa: I want to start education of radiation earlier because at elementary school, radiation first appears on the atomic bomb on social studies. I think we should teach children radiation as science. So I consider this generator a good teaching material.

◆Human effect by the accident at Fukushima nuclear power generation plant

Hiki: Will radiation from Fukushima influence ordinary people?

Ogawa: As long as I see the data of radiation dose, it is highly possible that effect is nothing, but only a hundred years have passed since isotope is started using. It’s too soon to say what human is affected and whether radiation is good for health or not. We should watch carefully.

Nozaki: If the data reported until now are right, I think human effect can be disregarded. The amount of ordinary people’s exposure is far smaller than that of medical exposure.

◆About government upper limit

Hiki: Do you have opinions about the government upper limit for the radiation dose toward food and people?

Nozaki: I cannot say how this should be revised, but I think this is the problem we have to be interested in.

Ogawa: It is important to discuss. Although there are many examples to discuss at level of public, upper limit of radiation is only said by government. So we have to learn and watch this.

Nozaki:I want to go on with the discussion without myth and allergy.Ogawa: I think this is good opportunity to do it.

◆Things to want to teach

Hiki: Do you have things you want to teach to peoples watching this web site?

Ogawa: I want to recognize a radioactive isotope and radiation are members of the natural world. Everything has bad side and good side like medicine.

Nozaki: It is important that we understand natural science using isotope and radiation. Isotope can use to search for a small amount of material movement. Radiation is useful for research means, so we can extend field of education of radiation.
