"In short, it means the palm oil
,
which is recognized as Earth-friendly
oil!"
In
2004, World Wildlife Fund
(WWF) teamed up with many stakeholders and established non-profit organization called “Roundtable on
Sustainable Palm Oil” (RSPO).
This organization operates under
the cooperation of the people involved
from various positions in the palm oil industry:
oil palm producers, traders, the
companies manufacturing the products which contain palm oil and so
on.
Its purposes are;
①establishing global certification standards
②promoting production and the use of sustainable palm
oil
Therefore……
The RSPO has developed a certificate system about
sustainable palm oil.
It defines 8 principles and 43 standards, and appeal
not to cut down tropical forest newly,
to consider environment and people
working at the oil palm plantation.
"Actually, they also
warn farmers to improve the working conditions of employees."
"They can grow “secure and safe” palm oils under the
management of more people!"
Also, the RSPO label shows
the products contain Certificated Sustainable Palm Oil,
so this label gives
us the confidence that the palm oil was produced in a socially and
environmentally responsible way.
"Yes! We can judge by ourselves
and select the best way not to apply a load to environment or
society!"
"Members of the RSPO advise producer of palm oil to consider
environment ,
and human rights! Outsider’s eye helps them the management of the
palm oil industry."
"It’s also an
important point of RSPO’s work! You gradually become sharp. "
↑the product containing CSPO and the label
AS of September 2015, proportion of palm oil globally
certified by the RSPO is 20%,
certified
production area is about 2.7million hectare,
the number of RSPO members is about 2,600.
These show RSPO’s activities are gradually spreading.
Some Japanese companies are members of RSPO and they produce
the products using CSPO.
Go to next page and let’s study about “Zero Emission
Project”!
"The palm oil industry has another problem; a large amount of
waste."
Palm oil is derived from the fruits or seeds of the oil
palm tree.
We should cut off unnecessary leaves when we harvest because
there are the fruits at the joint of leaves.
Also, 18years Passed since
sprouting, the amount of harvest dwindles away so oil palms are usually cut down
and transplanted in 25 years.
They’re usually left or burned up. At the oil
factories, they remove the fruits from the fruits bunches and they are left as
Empty Fruits Bunch (EFB).
There is also the
amount of liquid waste.
As we have explained, although
there is a lot of waste, they are not used and become the cause of environmental
pollution at producing areas.
“Well, Do we have to recycle the part of oil palm we have ever thrown away?"
“That’s right! So in producing countries, they are doing efforts
and studies to eliminate or reduce the waste called “Zero Emission.”
“
“Food isn’t wasted, besides we can get rid of the
waste!”
Making livestock feed!
There is a way making nutrient-rich feed through processing
leaves which were originally thrown away and mix it with other feeds.
Malaysia imports most of
beef and dairy products so increasing the self-sufficiency rate for them is at
issue. However, the pasture development will damage environment…
If
it spreads well, they can produce enough beef and dairy products people in
Malaysian eat using only leaves thrown away of 5%!
Raising
livestock in oil palm plantations with by-products of the palm oil industry and
turning the excreta into compost, we can make a good cycle.
“Awesome!”
There is also an effort close to our lives that using activated charcoals made from the shell for deodorants or facial soap in producing area.
We’ll introduce other efforts on the next page!
Thailand
is one of countries that produce palm oil much.
A certain company in
Thailand is working on reduction the waste,
from the palm oil industry
through making shopping bags using recycled paper made from empty fruit
bunch.
"Efforts by large enterprises like this
not only lead to improvement of the issue ,
but also have a major influence
on other companies, organization, besides society!"
In Thailand, they
make foundation of products display at supermarket and corrugated boxes, and so
on out of this technology.
"It’s very practical! I want to adopt way of thinking of recycle
for my life!"
