Current Status of Autonomous Cars
Driving Support Technology
Currently, a lot of vehicles are introducing various driving support technologies to prevent accidents. This is the first step towards the realization of full autonomous car capability.
- Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)
-
If there is danger of a collision, it will alert to the driver and if no evasive action is taken, brake control will be carried out to automatically decelerate or stop to avoid collision.

- These cars follow the preceding cars on the highway. They automatically perform pedal operation such as deceleration and stopping, even when you are in a traffic jam.

- Recognizing the lane lines, the steering operation is automatically assisted, so it keeps driving in the center of the lane.
SUBARU EyeSight Active Lane Keep Honda SENSING Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) MAZDA Lane Keep Assist System (LAS) - Lane Departure Prevention
- When a car is about to stray from a lane, it urges the driver to pay attention and assists the steering function to prevent accidents.

- Detects own lane and adjacent lane when the car changes lanes.
These are the systems where the autopilot controls the three main functions of the car driving, turning and stopping.
When they can be integrated and controlled simultaneously by improving the sensing technology such as measurement, it will evolve to an advanced driving support system (ADAS).

Efforts toward Realization of Autonomous Driving in Each Country
- America
- Google is to start public road tests using their Google car. In California, a law on automatic driving is being enforced. (But not including level 4 in which cars run on public roads) In Nevada, level 4 is also allowed on public roads as long as the drivers have special licenses. In addition, Tesla is developing a car that will enable full autonomous operation.
- England
- The Ministry of Transport is planning to conduct experiments on autonomous driving technology. In addition, autonomous operation other than unmanned operation, is planned to clearly indicate the process which the car can run by special domestic approval and a standard easing system.
- Germany
- Mercedes-Benz traveled on public roads approximately 100 km with an autonomous car (with a driver) in Frankfurt. Autonomous cars are approved under a special domestic law as long as a driver is in the car.
- Japan
- In Japan, the government has introduced a policy to promote automatic driving technology. However, compared to the countries mentioned above, there are still many issues to realize autonomous driving technology, such as lack of concrete legislative ideas, the outlook of public road driving tests have not yet been established.
