Wheelchair Mechanics ~Interview~
Q1. What do you pay attention to when you maintain wheelchairs, and what are the difficulties you face?A, To ensure that the wheelchair is performing at its full potential, I pay special attention to the operating parts and check their movement. It is also important to check the balance of the left and right sides for safety.Q2. Are there any difficult processes or things that you keep in mind when making a wheelchair?A. There is no right answer because each user has a different body shape and degree of disability. The most important and difficult part of the process is to communicate with the user to elicit his or her needs because we need to understand even the parts of the movement that the user is not aware of. |
Q3. What kind of qualifications or studies were necessary to become a mechanic?
A, There are no specific national qualifications, but basically, you need to like vehicles and have the knowledge to understand the basis of their operation. There is a lot to learn from racing cars and motorcycles!
Q4.Are there any differences between competition wheelchairs and daily use wheelchairs that need to be taken into account when making or maintaining them?
A, Everyday wheelchairs are designed for seating posture, while sports wheelchairs are designed for fine movement. It is more difficult to adjust a wheelchair for daily use in terms of maintenance and sports use in terms of measurements.Q5.Are there any problems with sports for people with disabilities and the work related to them in Japan at present?
A, Rather than a problem, I think there is a lack of knowledge among people involved in sports. If there were opportunities to be taught, the performance of wheelchairs would be much better. I think people overseas are more aware of this aspect.Summary
I learned that each wheelchair is carefully created to meet the needs and disabilities of each individual user. |
