SDGs

What's SDGs?

SDGs is abbreviation of "Sustainable Development Goals".

SDGs adopted at the UN Summit in September 2015.

Sustainable development is defined as "Development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". SDGs are defined an international goals for the 193 member countries of the UN to work toward a sustainable and better world in the 15 years from 2016 to 2030. These consist of 17 major goals and 169 specific targets to achieve them.

Goal 14: Life Below Water

Goal 14 is "Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development". Among the targets for achieving this goal are following targets.

Target 14.4
By 2020, effectively regulate harvesting and end overfishing, illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and destructive fishing practices and implement science-based management plans, in order to restore fish stocks in the shortest time feasible, at least to levels that can produce maximum sustainable yield as determined by their biological characteristices

Target 14.a
Increase scientific knowledge, develop research capacity and transfer marine technology, taking into account the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission Criteria and Guidelines on the Transfer of Marine Technology, in order to improve ocean health and to enhance the contribution of marine biodiversity to the development of developing countries, in particular small island developing States and least developed countries

and so on.

In order to use fishery resources in a sustainable manner, guidelines and management methods must be established and implemented based on science and technology.
In addition, Goal 12 "Responsibility to Create and Use" and Goal 17 "Achieve Goals through Partnership" are also related to this issue.
