Aging Problem
There are various types of infrastructure and they are well maintained.
In order to maintain infrastructure, we use a lot of artificial materials like metals such as iron and aluminum, concrete, plastic, and glass.
The artificial materials used will eventually decay and deteriorate.
Material | Metal | Plastic | Concrete | Glass |
---|---|---|---|---|
Example | House・Building | Vehicle parts | Road・Bridge | Windowpane |
Bridge | Synthetic glue | Breakwater | Display | |
Railroad track | Building materials | Water treatment facility | Glass fiber |
In addition to aging over time, natural disasters such as earthquakes and typhoons also contribute to the deterioration of infrastructures.
Cause of aging
The infrastructures that were originally developed in Japan was devastated by the effects of World War II.
However, the period of high economic growth between1954 to 1972 and
from the 1964 Tokyo Olympics led to rapid infrastructure development.
The deterioration now is so concentrated that even the administration could not keep up with it.
At a result of intensive development at that time,
(approximately 60 years ago).
