State of heavy rain outside of Japan

We don't know much about torrential rain conditions around the world...

This page will explain which states in the world have the most precipitation, which countries have the most precipitation, and so on.

Heavy rain around the world

The average annual precipitation for each of the six continents was calculated from data provided by the Statistics Bureau of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, as shown in the graph below.

Average rainfall on every six continents/a>

Although there were observation data for Oceania from Australia and Palau, Palau is located near the border between Asia and Oceania, and the data for Palau was 3665 mm, which is far from the 587 mm observed in Canberra, Australia, so it was considered to be an outlier and excluded from the list.Instead, we have added annual precipitation data from Darwin (1827.2 mm) and Geraldton (384.2 mm), two of the more remote regions of Australia from the Met Office. The graph of average annual precipitation by state shows that Asia has the most, followed by North America and Oceania. In contrast, Europe shows the least.

Average rainfall on asian countries

The Asian states graph of average annual precipitation by country shows that Malaysia has the most precipitation. So what measures are being taken in Malaysia?

The Malaysian Meteorological Department's website lists the criteria for issuing warnings for heavy rainfall. The warnings are divided into three levels: caution, bad, and dangerous, each of which specifies the expected severity in terms of time and amount of precipitation.

In addition, the Malaysian Meteorological Department website has a page about warnings right after opening it, which I thought was easier to read and recognize the danger than the JMA's website. I also learned that engineers from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government visited Malaysia in July 2022 to learn about the current status of flood countermeasures, water supply, and sewage systems, and to share Tokyo's knowledge and technologies related to flood countermeasures, water supply, and sewage systems. We also learned that both Japan and Malaysia have much to learn from each other in the area of urban infrastructure technology.
