The national commission on educational reform reported that goverment would make much of classics and history. From Ayako Sono, who is a menber of the commission once wrote "No need for the time of Modern Japanese. Students should learn composition and include philosophy and classics." It is certain that they will attach importance to both classics and history.
For many students, however, it is difficult to know how to set about classics and history. Especially for 6th and 7th grade students, who first learn Japanese history and classics.
Teachers are saying that all the existances are the result of continuous historical existances. What it is now is the piles of the past. From classics, we can learn the long immutableideas and feelings. Classics are the masterpiece which lived longer than student's age. Classics and history are the liberal arts. To know the history is to know the present.
But students says, We feel really sleepy during the class. No need for learning old grammers, which no one now can speak or use. We only learn for the entrance examination. As in the case of Mr. Fujimura, we can't believe the history.
In Jr. high schools, we learn history more than 30% of all the social study. They use pictures to feel familiar to. They cut off the newspapers. But that's not enough.
We propose that in some schools, history and classics should be learned from the present. As we all know, we study history from the primitive period to modern period. On the other hand, if we learn from the present, we can think histories more familiar; "Why did Mr. Obuchi die?" "Because he fought against Mr.Ozawa." "Why he had to do so?" "Because the 55th system has collapsed".... It's only an example. We can start from famous things or something which is familiar to students. They can start from trading cards, learning studen's parent's job....etc, and learn how the world changed from the present to the past.
The same in classics. We start from modern works, it can be battle royal, and then old usage of Japanese letters works, like Kirikirijin by Hisashi Inoue, and works of Meiji and Taisyo period.
We can check our birth day's newspaper. To see them, we can understand the incidents in 1970s, but how about 1940s? It can make a better view of the change in Japanese language.
The most important thing is that we should start from interesting things in present. By this means students will be able to understand history and classics much easier.
