▲North of park

Funai  prospered in the reign of sorin Otomo by trading with Europian Countries.

Adopting many Europian advanced culture by trading,Funai developed as a leading city  of

culture in Japan.

Most of relics have lost now,but many statue placed in Yuho-Park tell us prosperity of culture in the Era of Sorin.

Please let us introduce monument which related to Europian culture.

MONUMENT OF ST.FLANCIS XAVIER

This is the monument of Spanish missionary,St.Fraicis Xavier.

In 1551 He came Funai for propagation of Christianity.

There is a relief of a world map with a sea route he travelled in background of his statue.

It  was made by a sculptor named Churyo sato and placed in 1969.

We can find it  at the corner of Oote-Park,next to the left,northern edge of Yuho-Park.

MONUMENT OF INTRODUCTION OF WESTERN MUSIC

Funai is the first town in Japan where Western music was introduced.

In this monument,boys sing together while Father plays the viola.

I heard these boys also played viola in front of Sorin Otomo in 1562.

It was made by a sculptor Naoki Tominaga,and placed in 1971.

We can see it at the corner of Oita prefectural office,right in the northen edge of Yuho-Park.

MONUMENT OF DON MANCIO ITO

This is the statue of Mancio Ito,who was dispatched to Pope in 1582.

He accompanied Tensho-keno-shisetsu as a representor of Sorin Otomo.

We can see him on the way to meet Pope,wearing Western style.

It was made by sculptor Seibou Kitamura and placed in 1975.He is also wellknown as a creator of“STATUE OF PEACE”in Nagasaki.

MONUMENT OF INTRODUCTION OF WESTERN MEDICINE

Funai is the  place where Western-styled hospital was first established in Japan by Leis De Almeida,Portguese doctor.It was established in 1557.

In this monument,he performs an operation with his assistants.

It was made by sculptor named Tadao Koga and placed in 1972.

MONUMENT OF INTRODUCTION OF FOREIGN PLAY

Funai is also the place where the foreign play was first performed in 1560,in Christmas day.

It shows the scene of two wemen who wanted Soromon’s trial.

It was made by Yasutake Funakoshi and placed in 1974.

MONUMENT OF NURSERY HOME AND MILK

Luis De Almeida established not only hospital but also Nursery home in Funai.

He used milk to bring children there.

We can find Almeida in the center of monument,and beside we can see nurse and children and cow.

It was made by Katsuzo Enbuchi,placed in 1973.
