Basic rules for riding a bicycle

"Five principles for safe use" is one of the five most important rules to protect when riding a bicycle by the Traffic Management Headquarters of the National Police Agency on July 10, 2007.

1. Bicycles run on the roadway in principle, running on the sidewalk is allowed exceptions.

As mentioned above, because the bicycle is positioned as "vehicle" under the Road Traffic Law, in principle it is necessary to pass through the roadway where there is a distinction between the sidewalk and the roadway.
There are some exceptions.

・Child under 13 years old, elderly aged 70 and over, physically handicapped person are driving a bicycle.
・When parking on the left side is difficult due to a parked car, when the traffic volume of the car is large, etc.

2. Drive along the left side of the roadway

The bicycle must approach the left side of the roadway and pass.　 Traffic on the right is forbidden. Also, the roadside belt that a bicycle can pass through is limited to those on the left side of the road. There is a danger of colliding with other bicycles or motorcycles that are running on the left side of the road on the right side, or bumping into the car when passing with them, so please stop absolutely. Let's keep the traffic on the left side to safely pass the road.

3. Pedestrian priority is on the sidewalk, bicycle slowly goes down the road

The sidewalk is pedestrian preferred. When the bicycle passes through the sidewalk, you have to slowly go to the side close to the roadway (pass at the speed you can stop at once). In addition, if you stop pedestrian traffic, you have to pause. Ringing a bicycle bell to make a pedestrian avenue or overtaking a pedestrian without slowing down speed is a violation of the rules. There is also the danger that the bicycle side will injure pedestrians. Let's try easy driving with consideration to pedestrians. 4. Observe safety rules

5. Children wear helmets
