Participation in the junior high school students’ summit

2015.2016 In January, we participated in the junior high school students’ summit
・Tour of Japan Atomic Energy Agency(Independent administrative agency)Tono Science Center in Mizunami City, Gifu Prefecture
・Dialogue on geological disposal of nuclear waste and nuclear power generation with junior high school students from various parts of Japan
Tour of Electric Science Museum

<Tour of Tono Science Center>
Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory aim establishment of technology to investigate and method of analysis bedrocks and groundwater, maintenance of foundation of engineering technology used in a deep underground. For that reason, it investigates strength of bedrocks, targeted at mainly granite, flow groundwater, water quality and so on. Also, it establishes shafts horizontal gallery in underground actually and does research.

Our Impressions
Acutually, we dived in 300m (photo1) below the ground that depth geological disposal of nuclear waste will be done. There, we looked at the appearance groundwater was flowing(photo2), and listened to speech about research done such sizes of earthquakes in the underground. Underground was hotter.
*Tono Science Center is established as a condition not to bring in radioactive wastes and be a final disposal site of radioactive wastes, so geological disposal of nuclear waste isn’t done there actually.

<Dialogue>
Nearly 30 junior high school students from various parts of Japan were divided into about 5 people and discussed about geological disposal of nuclear waste and nuclear power generation. Participated students were from schools in Kanto area where consumes a lot of electric power, school in Niigata, where is a nuclear power plant and school in Rokkasyo Mura, where disposal and storage of radioactive wastes are done.

Our Impressions
It was interesting to be able to hear a lot of agreements and disagreements from the students with different points of view. As we discussed, we found that the more we thought about the issue, the more complicated the issue became.
