How to choose disposal site?

First, they recruit the area which can undertake disposal sites. And then, they research many things like below.

1.literature searching：They confirm the past record like geologic map and search if there are some volcano,active fault,jugum and corrosion.

2.outline investigation：They search if fructure zone in rock and flow of ground water affect the underground facilities and there are the places where it is difficult to dig to do a boring survey.

3.close investigaion：They research strength of rock or pH value to use headway for survey. And they research if nature of ground water and characteristic of rock are good for the geological disposal of nuclear waste.

At each stage, we will proceed through "Site survey" → "Design" → "Confirmation of safety" repeatedly while listening to the opinions of the municipal mayor and the prefectural governor who planned the disposal site.

Site survey: Based on the survey for selection of disposal sites, we will narrow down the areas that are free of natural disasters such as earthquakes and volcanoes. 

Design: We will design engineered barriers and facilities. 

Confirmation of safety: As a result of site survey and design, we confirm whether safety can be secured. 

If safety cannot be confirmed here, "site survey" or "correspondence by design" will be carried out. However, if safety cannot be secured, we conclude that the place is inappropriate for geological disposal.
