2019.3.22 Group formation

Five people interested in marine plastic issues gathered and an exploration activity began.

5.17 Field work

In the morning, all the members visited the Earthquake Research Institute, the University of Tokyo. In the afternoon, we divided the group into two and one visited the Ministry of the Environment, and the other visited the nonprofit organization, OWS. The organization provides people with the opportunity to get acquainted with the nature and creatures of the sea. We were able to grasp the overall picture of the marine plastic problem and raise a sense of crisis about the problem.

7.17 Lecture by a specialist, Dr. Mitsuo Uematsu

Dr. Mitsuo Uematsu, Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo and President of the Saitama International Center for Environmental Sciences, visited us to hear more about the whereabouts of plastic flowing into the sea and its impact on living things.

Late August Creation and submission of Chuo University environmental papers

Chuo University sponsored a 19th high school student global environmental thesis paper contest. We produced a thesis and apply for a contest. The title was "Save the Sea and Plastics."

Early September Application for the Antarctic and Arctic Science Contes

The National Institute of Polar Research sponsored the 16th Junior and Senior High School Antarctic Arctic Science Contest. We suggested experiments to measure the biodegradable plastic decomposition rate and environment in polar regions to find new biodegradable plastic decomposition conditions.

9.10 Discussion with Dr. Mitsuo Uematsu

Dr. Uematsu came and provided advice on the policy of the research activity based on the prepared thesis. We also exchanged opinions on the causes of marine plastic problems and the nature of the problems.

9.14-15 Dissertation Display at Cultural Festival

The prepared thesis was exhibited at our high school festival and was viewed by many people.

12.3 Discussion with Dr. Mitsuo Uematsu

We received advice on the web submitted in the first round of the web contest. In addition, we have decided a policy for the content to be announced at the forum on marine issues, scheduled for February 1 this year, sponsored by AEON Co.,Ltd.,Japan,

A final review of the February 1 Forum will be made.

2.1 Participation in the 4th AEON Future Earth Forum

At the Yasuda Auditorium at the University of Tokyo, we sent out the results of our research to 1,000 general participants and professors and experts, and called for a reduction in plastics. He listened to various lectures on the marine environment and resources, and was a catalyst for deepening my thoughts on marine environmental issues, not limited to marine plastic issues.

2.15 Participation in the 7th National Marine Education Summit Poster Session 

Poster presentations from elementary school students to researchers have been made at Ito Kane Hall, Ito International Academic Research Center. In addition to giving their opinions, I was able to learn about various activities related to the marine environment, and I was inspired a lot.
The poster used is almost the same as the one shown below at the Spring Meeting of the Geographical Society of Japan 2020.

2.15 The 22nd National Junior High School Web Contest Final Judgment

We won the gold prize as a result of the final announcement of the web contest.
