Japan's blood donation system began with a cabinet decision in 1964, and steadily achieved domestic self-sufficiency of blood products for blood transfusion by donating blood in 1974 and domestic self-sufficiency of blood coagulation factor products in 1994. It has evolved.

This law stipulates the basic principles of blood business such as blood donation and the responsibilities of related parties such as the national government.

As the name suggests, it is basic to improve the safety of blood products, secure a stable supply based on domestic self-sufficiency by domestic blood donation, promote proper use, and secure a fair and transparent implementation system of blood business. It is listed in the philosophy.

Furthermore, regarding measures related to blood business such as blood donation, it was decided to formulate and announce basic policies and various plans set by the government.

About Japanese blood donation standards

There are two types of blood donations in Japan: whole blood donation and component blood donation.

Whole blood donation is a blood donation that collects whole blood, and component blood donation is a blood donation that collects only a specific component in the blood.
