＜八月十八日の政変（はちがつじゅうはちにちのせいへん）＞Coup of August 18
当時、力を持っていたのは、尊王攘夷派（そんのうじょういは）の長州藩（ちょうしゅうはん）。
それを邪魔に思っていた公武合体派（こうぶがったいは）の薩摩藩（さつまはん）は、
同じ公武合体派の会津藩（あいづはん）と手を組んだ。
そして、８月１８日、朝廷（ちょうてい）の公武合体派を取り込み、
尊王攘夷派を京都から追い出すことに成功したのである。
そのとき、会津藩おあずかりの新撰組（当時、壬生浪士（みぶろうし））は、警護にあたり、実績を残している。
そしてここから、公武合体派が力を持つことになるのであった。
