スイレン
日本にはヒツジグサの1種類のみ自生します。日本全国の池や沼に広く分布しています。白い花を午後、未の刻ごろに咲かせる事からその名が付いたと言われています。睡蓮はヒツジグサの漢名です。
水位が安定している池などに生息し、地下茎から長い茎を伸ばし、水面に葉や花を浮かべます。葉は円形から楕円形で, その部分に深い切れ込みが入ります。葉の表面に強い撥水性はありません。
多くの植物では気孔は葉の裏側にありますが、スイレンでは葉の表側に分布します。根茎から直接伸びる花柄の先端に直径５〜１０cmほどの花をつけます
日本において一般的なスイレンは、いくつかの野生種を交配、新種改良し、作り出された園芸種です。花の色、葉の色、模様などについて様々な姿の品種が存在します。
