What we think about
I associate “climate change” with heatstroke. The increase of the number of heatstroke patients, and the rise of earth’s average temperature seems to be related to each other. I also think that SDGs, the global target in the United Nations is related to what I have been studying Goal 13 is “climate action”. On the page of basic knowledge of heatstroke, we built a hypothesis that approaching the issue about the increasing number of heatstroke patients can lead to solve problems on climate change. In this way, I strongly feel the necessity of dealing with climate change, such as abnormal temperature in terms of decreasing the number of its patients. Moreover, I have learned that climate change promotes the risk of extreme weather such as drought, heat wave, and heavy rain. I consider that we have to care about saving energy, for example, by diligently turning off electricity in order to cut down the amount of CO₂ emissions.
Good point. In my case, heatstroke made me think of “heat island phenomenon”. Due to heat island phenomenon, it is getting hotter and hotter in urban areas in summer, and this can bring a large number of heatstroke patients as one of its harmful effects. Although it may not be a fundamental solution, the prevention of heat island phenomenon can be helpful to decrease the number of patients of heatstroke. It is often said that the average temperature has increased by about 3℃ in Tokyo in the past 100 years, and the emergence of thermal contamination is more serious. We cannot ignore the problem. I recommend that we work for the reduction of exhaust heat by using shade curtain and greening. My motto is “do not store, produce, and get the heat”.
That makes sense. In my opinion, considering heatstroke, “liveable city” came up on my mind. On the page of the measures in the Olympics Games, we learned about a new pavement technology to alleviate heat. I believe that raising awareness to decline the number of heatstroke patients is important and it can make local governments to plan to take measures for heatstroke come true. As the preparation for 2020 Tokyo Olympics Games and for foreign visitors to Japan, towns and cities need to be improved more. Thus, I am now interested in comfortable towns to live in. For example, there seems to be a way of circulating heat by using the sea breeze and the park wind and making the wind path in the town. Making use of wind is eco-friendly. It will also get closer to achieving SDGs, Goal 11 “sustainable cities and communities”.
I think we need to think about many different “social issues” because I have felt closer to heatstroke when I saw it in the news. Based on the impact of heat island phenomenon, for instance, the urban problem of overcrowding is also related. Some cities are suffering from overpopulation while others are in trouble with depopulation. In that way, the causes of heatstroke are connected with various social issues. There are many things that cannot be solved on my own, but we should not forget everyone of us is a consumer who contributes to some social issues or problems that we are facing against. Choosing our way of consumption can be, I think, a way of action to save the environment.
The ideas above are very interesting! To sum up, I think it is not too much to say that all the actions for the social and environmental problems are connecting with one another. That is why every single action is valuable and it will be more valuable to notice the connections or relations between the problems and between those who are working for them. Actually, this way of thinking or “awareness” gave us confidence that we have been involved in something useful for “the earth and the future”. Now I am proud of what we have been doing, which will motivates me to find the next move of our team! I was aware of it through our project and I hope many people can raise their awareness toward problems around them. We would be happy if heatstroke could be a door to raise many people’s awareness toward serious social or environmental problems around them.
We hope that this website of solving heatstroke can help develop your mindset in that turning to major issues including environmental problems as your own problems, as our website title indicates.
