What is renewable energy?

About renewable energy

*The status of renewable energy worldwide is explained on the page 'The world and energy'! Please take a look there too.

Renewable energy is defined in the Act on the Promotion of the Use of Non-fossil Energy Sources and the Effective Use of Fossil Energy Raw Materials by Energy Suppliers, which states that

' "'Renewable energy sources' are solar, wind and other non-fossil energy sources that are recognised as being capable of being used as an energy source in perpetuity."

It is stipulated that.

Non-fossil energy refers to energy other than fossil energy (e.g. oil, coal, natural gas), which is always present in nature, such as solar and geothermal. The main characteristics of renewable energies are that they do not emit carbon dioxide, they are never depleted and they are ubiquitous. However, renewable energies are not only beneficial.

Problems with renewable energy

This section describes the problems with renewable energy. There are two main problems with renewable energy.

The power cannot be generated according to demand because it is weather-dependent
Higher generation costs

Each of these two issues is explained in this section.

<Cannot generate electricity in line with demand>

Renewable energies generate electricity from naturally occurring raw materials, so the amount of electricity generated is not stable (* there are exceptions). The amount of electricity generated by solar and wind power depends on the weather at the time of generation.

You can see that there is a significant difference between sunny and rainy days.

So-called developed countries that have relied on stable non-fossil energy generation to grow their countries will find it difficult to fully embrace such unstable renewable energy from now on. If they are to fully embrace renewable energy, they will need technology to store it. I hope that Japan will gradually adopt renewable energy and one day become a country that is 100% powered by renewable energy and emits "zero" carbon dioxide.

However, geothermal and ocean thermal power generation is not affected by weather or time of day, and the use of the electricity generated is very high because it is stable all year round. On the other hand, the amount of electricity generated by geothermal power is extremely low compared to solar and wind power. In addition, ocean thermal power generation is expensive to install and the areas where power can be generated are unevenly distributed.

<The cost of power generation is higher>

One of the problems with renewable energy is that the amount of electricity generated is low in relation to the cost of installing the machines. Non-fossil energy is cheaper to install than renewable energy and does not require large areas of land. These problems are also probably a major reason why renewable energy is not becoming more widespread.
