Can we do our own fingerprinting?!

Speaking of fingerprints, in recent years they have been applied to smart phones and room locks. If fingerprint information is stolen, it would be the same as giving away your password.
In this experiment, we will see if it is possible to collect fingerprints with household items, and if it is possible to unlock a smartphone using fingerprints on cellophane tape!
Let's start taking fingerprints right away!

Fingerprinting experiment!

Preparations

preparation
  • cellophane tape
  • glass cup
  • soft brush
  • Flour (wheat flour, eye shadow, etc.)

Fingerprinting method

Step 1 Press your finger against a glass cup.
Step 2 Sprinkle some flour (wheat flour, eyeshadow, powder) on the spot where you pressed your finger.
Step 3 Use a soft brush to gently remove excess powder.
Step 4 Place a piece of cellophane tape firmly over the fingerprint on the glass cup.
Step 5 Gently peel off the cellophane tape.

Fingerprinting is complete!

In this experiment, we used wheat flour and eyeshadow to collect fingerprints!

Experimental results

In the experiment using flour, if you look closely at the photo above, you can see that fingerprints were collected. On the other hand, in the experiment using eyeshadow, no fingerprint-like patterns were obtained.
From the above, we can see that some types of powder are more likely to show fingerprints than others.

Can the tapebe used to break through the fingerprint scanner!?

Next, verify that you can unlock it with your fingerprint on the cellophane tape!

Preparations

  • cellophane tape
  • smart phone (The one with fingerprint authentication function)

Verification method

Step 1 Press your finger directly on the cellophane tape to make a fingerprint.
Step 2 Put the cellophane tape on the home button so that the fingerprint overlaps the button.
Step 3 Using a finger different from the fingerprint on the tape, press the home button over the tape.
Step 4 Check to see if the lock is unlocked.

Verification Results

I could not unlock my smartphone with another person's finger.
In recent years, the performance of fingerprint authentication has been improving, and the security has become more and more accurate, so it seems that it is getting harder and harder to break through fingerprint authentication easily at home!

Even though it is difficult to break through fingerprint authentication, it is possible to create fingerprints in all kinds of ways, as long as the fingerprint information is obtained.
We can never say we are safe, so let's all be careful!
