IPv4
First of all, "IP" in IPv4 stands for "Internet Protocol" and defines the method of transmitting data to the target computer in the process of using the Internet. Also, "v4" means version 4, so "IPv4" is the fourth version of IP. Such IPv4 became popular in the late 1990s and is still in use today. IPv4 also represents an IP address as 32 bits; the total number of IP addresses can be 2^32, or about 4.3 billion addresses. However, as the global population has surpassed 8 billion in recent years, there is a problem of not being able to set one IP address per person. This is the so-called "IP address exhaustion problem.
IPv6
IPv6 was developed to solve the IP address exhaustion problem that occurred with IPv4. The total number of IP addresses is 2^128, or approximately 340,000,000 possible IP addresses, which is almost infinite. Another advantage is that there are no difficult settings, making it easy to use. However, there are some disadvantages. First, an IPv6-compliant optical fiber line and router are required. In addition, online games are not compatible with IPv6, and the communication speed may be the same as that of IPv4, even if you have gone to the trouble of switching to IPv6.
IPv4, IPv6, and IPaddress
IPv4 is represented by 32 bits, and IPv6 is represented by 128 bits, which are the number of digits in a binary number sequence. In the case of IPv4, it is possible to convert a 32-digit number sequence into an IP address by dividing it into 8 digits and expressing them in decimal numbers.
