We conducted a survey of 230 first-year high school students, who are eligible to take the new common test, to find out how much they know about "Information".
The most important subject was "Foreign language" at 41% (95 students), followed by "Mathematics" at 31% (72 students). This was followed by "Mathematics" at 31% (72 students), with "Foreign language" and "Mathematics" accounting for 72% of the total, or 167 students. On the other hand, "Information" was selected by 4% of the students (11 students), the lowest among the six choices.
Six percent (14 respondents) knew about the format of the questions, and 94% (216 respondents) did not know the format of the questions.
We thought that while many students were focusing on their previous major subjects, such as foreign languages, the new subject of "Information" was not being emphasized as much and that the subject itself was not attracting much interest. We believe that this may have led to as many as 94% of the respondents being relatively unaware of the question format because of the lack of emphasis on the subject of "Information". It is true that the subject of "information" may be difficult to understand or may not generate interest in the first place, depending on its content. Therefore, one solution would be to use something that many students like or find interesting as an entry point to get them interested in "Information" and increase their level of interest.
