ホタル



　日本国内では約４０種が知られています。
　本州以南の各地に分布し、５月から６月にかけて孵化します。多くの種類の幼虫は湿潤な森林で生活し、種類によってはマイマイやキセルガイなどの陸生巻貝類やミミズ、ヤスデなどの土壌動物を食べます。
　ゲンジボタルやヘイケボタルのようによく光るホタルは夜行性のものが多く、昼行性のオバボタルなどはほとんど光りません。それに対して、卵や幼虫の時代にはほとんどの種類が発光します。

　ホタルの幼虫です。大きさは１cmほどです。
