How much time high school students use smartphone

me-meReading is bothersome.I'd like to touch smartphone forever than reading a book!

nakamuraMeiMei-chan,isn't it internet dependency?

baseball boyHuh? What is dependence?

babi-Then, before explaining the dependence, let's see How long is the person using the Internet.

According to the "survey on usage situation and information behavior of information and communication media" (Ministry of Public Management Information and Communication Policy Research Institute) announced in july 2017, Currently, the average use time of the Internet by mobile devices in the 10s and 20s is

weekday:about 2 hours
holiday:about 3 hours

(same document pdf16page)This is about twice the average of all ages.

In addition, the questionnaire result which the student of our school's student(about 300 people) answered is as follows.

smartphone usage time(1st to 3rd year high school boys)
10-30 minutes4%
30 minutes to 1 hour16%
1-3 hours55%
3-5 hours20%
5 hours or more5%
smartphone usage time(1st to 3rd year high school girls)
10-30 minutes1%
30 minutes to 1 hour21%
1-3 hours57%
3-5 hours18%
5 hours or more3%

babi- Looking at this, you can see that "1 to 3 hours"is the most common in both males and females.

Furthermore, at our school, one in five people is using more than 3 hours(per day).

However, it cannot be decided whether it is "dependent" only by the use time. It is good to measure once on young20:the page of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication.

In addition,SNS is the most common use(boys 33%,girls 49%). The next most frequently used way was information gathering and games using the internet.

what is dependence

me-meThe reasult of young20 was 60 points.Internrt dependent trend is "medium".It is still okay.

baseball boyI lost...I got 15 points. But what is dependence after all?

babi-So, I will explain.

Addiction illustration

According to Wikipedia, smartphone dependenceis that

to spend most of the day's time on the smartphone, and come to use smartphones without doing things we should do

Acoording to Sookeun Byun, Internet dependence means

to excessively use internet to hinder daily life.

When using smartphones through the Internet,we could define

"smartphone dependence = internet dependence".

disadvantages of dependence

Why!?2 hours of learning effect disappears

"Even if I touch a smartphone, I study every day!...but I do not make good score." Don't you have such troublse?

There is shock data thatthe brain after touching smartphone is not suitable for learning.

According to the book"やってはいけない脳の習慣(Brain habits that should not be done)",

About 30 minutes to 1 hour after playing for a long time on television and games, the prefrontal cortex is not working sufficiently. Even if you read a book in this state, your understanding will decline.

If you use your smartphone for a long time,it seems that it will be in the same state as after watching games and TV, and the effect of learning will be lost.([2],p21~23)

me-meSo I can't memorize world history terms well.

nakamuraEven if I increase my studying time,if I touch my smartphone,my brain will not work.

baseball boyEven studying is a waste.

babi-・・・。

Especially communication application seems to have a strong influence on academic achievement lowering.

The most noteworthy thing in the communication application is the function called "kidoku"(Function that the opponment notifies that the message has been read).

It is convenient because you can check whether the message was read by the other party. However, the cycle of "sending a message→check if the message is coming→reading a message that comes" will be repeated frequently. ([2],p33)

Since communication applications became popular, it became easy to communicate with people.
Moreover due to the function "kidoku", the number of checks increases and the concentration ability becomes easy to be interrupted.

stages of dependence

babi- Considering from the reason for people's action, it is thought that dependence has three stages.([1],p101~104)

The first stage is to do what you need.
The second stage, doing for fun.
The third stage is doing for escape.

Among them, the third stage is said to be the most dangerous.

To escape from disgusting feelings, we subliminally use Internet, mobile phone and smartphone. In that case, if we do not have any purpose or special fun, we feel distracted by using it for the time being.(omission)
At this stage, we may feel "I can't do without this" and "I can't imagine life without this."([2],p103)

In particular, it is a dangerous stage that you check a smartphone while studying.

cause of dependence

baseball boyGenerally I understood, but if I used smartphones all the time, is there any problem?

nakamuraYou don't understand anything. Did you hear that? Learning effect decreases, concentration is interrupted, time runs out.

me-meBut I can't help touching a smartphone. How do you think?

babi-I tried to classify what seems to be the cause of the internet dependence into two types.

No1: self assertive type

illustration of those who are dedicated to twitter

Anonymity

In SNS(social network service), you can post words, pictures, videos, etc. easily and anonymously.

Even those who cannot talk to each other well in real life can make a conversation in the internet by taking advantage of the feature of anonymity. You can also expose your hobby to the public.

There are people who are completely different from face to face communication in talking manner and attitude in "SNS".

Need for approval

Twitter and Instagram have features like "nice" and "retweet". Many people are doing twitter with the aim of getting "nice".

Moreover, the desire to be recognized from such a person, the desire to be praised is called desire for approval.

In a book "アバタ― [avatar]" written by Yamada Yusuke, the main characters were addicted to dressing games and dedicated their bodies and minds to the game.
As expected, the main character make their avatar more beautiful. It can be said that it is an act to satisfy desire for approval.

No2: entertainment type

illustration watching movies

It can simply be fun(Thinking nothing, you can be comfortable.)

For example, the feature of smartphone games and movies has a strong stimulus(from media characteristics, that can fully use video, letters, sounds) and we can enjoy it anywhere. Also, the Internet has many eye-catching links come out one after another. This means that it is designed to attract people in the first place.(Details is described at 'concentration' in Reading page)

Also, in terms of games, "Desire for approval" of wanting others to evaluate their strong weapons and rare items will increase.

Shallow relationship

I attended a concert with a woman I got to know on Twitter. I hesitated to meet her in real, but eventually I was able to meet without any problems. However, there is a possibility that it will not end peacefully.

There could be a fraud or there could be a possibility of being a man(not a woman). At the first meeting through SNS, this kind of crime are actually occurring sometimes. Even though there is such a dangerous thing, people are seeking a connection on the net.
Why is that?
It is because the relationship of the net is shallow. People are often tired of "real human relationship" to look at the person's complexion or to fake himself not to float from the surroundings. When thinking of it, it can not be generalized to say that "knowing the other person well" plays a positive role.

On the other hand, when we meet with others through internet, we don't know each other's features, so we can make friends casually. Moreover, once the relationship with the other party gets worse, you can quickly break the relationship. The shallow human relationship is healing of people in a sense.

me-meOh, these are applies to me ...

baseball boyI like muscle training than using a smartphone.

nakamuraI don't know why ... I am very sleepy.

the Substance causes dependence

babi- Well, When we wish for approval desire or entertainment as described above, dependence is more likely to occur.

It is written in the book "インターネット・ゲーム依存症 ネトゲからスマホまで(Internet/Game Addiction ~from netoge to sumaho~)"

『When playing the game for 50 minutes, we compare the game started and the brain which ended the game. Then, it was found that the release of dopamine was increased by 2.0 times in the region called the striatum in the brain.
(omission)
The striatum is the center of pleasure, and the increased release of dopamine in that area brings pleasure. Whether it is a person or a monkey, it will repeat the act of bringing pleasure. That will create "dependence".』([1],p101~104)

Normally, dopamine is also called a hormone that makes motivation to live, it also becomes a source of motivation. It is no exaggeration to say that people live to release dopamine.

However, when the amount of dopamine continues to be secreted excessively, the pleasant feeling at that time becomes a habit, and it feels unsatisfactory with the usual dose of dopamine. That causes "dependence".

Watching videos one after the other

Being praised about my weapon in the game

We get "nice" on Twitter

In order to taste the pleasant feeling obtained from these,it is thought that you frequently check Twitter's notice or go into the online space without any meaning.

me-meoh I see, I'm craving for dopamine.

baseball boyno! I'm craving for protein materials.

Latest article: SNS designed to depend on

babi-A very recent article on mid-November 2017.The following is a warning to SNS by sean parker of the founding president of Facebook. What kind of intention did Facebook have made over ten years ago? I think that the point that is the statement of the founder himself is a point.

Sean Parker, the founding president of Facebook, gave me a candid insider's look at how social networks purposely hook and potentially hurt our brains.

(omission) God only knows what it's doing to our children's brains."

Facebook being the first of them, ... was all about: 'How do we consume as much of your time and conscious attention as possible?'

"And that means that we need to sort of give you a little dopamine hit every once in a while, because someone liked or commented on a photo or a post or whatever. And that's going to get you to contribute more content, and that's going to get you ... more likes and comments."

"It's a social-validation feedback loop ... exactly the kind of thing that a hacker like myself would come up with, because you're exploiting a vulnerability in human psychology."

"The inventors, creators — it's me, it's Mark [Zuckerberg], it's Kevin Systrom on Instagram, it's all of these people — understood this consciously. And we did it anyway."

Technicians used the human vulnerability to bind people to the service called SNS. This fact was quoted in a hurry as there was a part that was consistent with what we have investigated so far.

Also, I was already surprised that developers have already intentionally made people depend on SNS applications over 10 years ago.
