Why did we start researching food loss?

In Japan, there are about 6.46 million tons of food loss produced.
This is 2times the amount of the World Food Programme. In addition, Japans self sufficiency rate is 39%, and this is very low compared to other developed countries. Each and every people’s movement and awareness effects on the situation of food loss.

To try to make an action toward food loss is to understand Japan and other countries situations of food loss, and to understand the relation of the food company and consumers were important.
2020 Olympics and 2030 SDGs are coming up. We thought this may be a good chance and opportunity to think about our situation through
considering other countries situations. If we make a movement and set the goal toward this opportunity, we may be able to spread ideas and thoughts of food loss to the world.

Japan and foreign country

In May, we visited the Ministry of Agriculture and found out the current situation of food loss in Japan and that there are many tasks.
Thats why we thought about researching food loss situation through other countries because we thought that is the best way to find the delay of Japan’s measure.
The current situation was, that consumers doesn’t have enough knowledge.
So we though it is the time for the consumers to make action.
Food companies produced food loss as well. Do you know anything abut it??

(link)We also get some questionnaires about consciousness and realized that there are diffarences between Japan and other countries.



Companies and Consumers

We are trying to research about food loss form a different perspective. Many people has been researching about food loss from house hold but not much about food companies.
The visit to the Ministry of Agriculture made us realise an know that there are a lot of food loss produced form food companies. Though consumers can know about food companies through ESG investment and CSR, there are not many people who understand anything about food loss from food companies.
We thought this indifference was a problem, and we thought if we researched about the
connection between companies and consumers, we will be able to understand the problems and cause.
