use-by day 1/3 rule foodbank

What is 1/3rule?

1/3rule is a rule of food industry in Japan which divides "best-before period" into three equal parts.

For example, if best-before period has six months, the first two months are called "delivery period(makers have to deliver products to retailers during this period)". And the next twomonths are called "sales period(if products are not bought by consumers during this period, retailers must withdraw them from merchandise display shelters).

To put it shortly, products are withdrawn without reaching consumers by this 1/3 rule.

So how about overseas?
Take European and US countries for example,In U.S.A they adopts1/2rule,Italy,France,Brussels are adopting 2/3rule,And 3/4rule is being adopted in UK.

From these examples, you will recognize that how Japanese approaches to foodloss problems are out of touch.
In 2013, Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries conducted an experiment to study effects of the changes from 1/3rule to 1/2rule(only snacks and drinks). And through this experimet, it came to light that Japan can save about 87 billion yen with the change of 1/3rule to 1/2rule.

But actually, still many companies in Japan are adopting the 1/3rule.
