Rabies
I got my vaccination the other day. It really hurt.
What vaccination did you get?
I think it was for rabies.
What is rabies anyway?
Rabie is a life-threatening disease. It is good that you got the vaccination.
According to the Rabies Prevention Law, it is compulsory for dogs to be vaccinated and to have a certificate of vaccination attached to them.
Infection Route
All mammals can become infected when the virus in their saliva enters the body from the bite of a rabid animal.
Symptoms
Hypersensitivity reaction to stimuli
General paralysis → Inability to walk
Paralysis of masticatory muscles → Mandibular droop, difficulty in swallowing
Regardless of the type, almost 100% of all animals will eventually die.
Current Situation
There is a possibility that the disease can be prevented by vaccinating the animal right after it has been bitten
There is no cure for rabies once it has occurred, so infected animals are immediately killed
In Japan, the law was enacted in 1950, and the number of rabies cases in the country was reduced to zero in 1957!
Since Japan is an island nation, there is no rabid animal invasion from other countries, and the number of rabies cases has remained at zero
→In Japan, many people tend to think of rabies as a disease of the past
What Owners Should Do
According to the Rabies Prevention Law, it is compulsory to
Report the dog within 30 days from the date of acquisition (or 90 days after the dog's birth if the dog is younger than 90 days old)
⇒Attach the issued identification tag to the dog
Get a vaccination once a year
⇒Attach the injection slip issued to the dog
Be aware that rabies is a dangerous disease, and take countermeasures!
Summary
Rabies has now been eradicated in Japan. However, it is still rampant overseas, and once infected, it is a dangerous disease with an almost 100% fatality rate.
Be aware that rabies is a dangerous disease, and take precautions!
