Law 1/3
The Animal Welfare and Management Law
The animal welfare and management law is officially called An Outline of the Act on Welfare and Management of Animals. It was created to prevent the abuse and abandonment of animals, and conversely, to prevent animals from injuring people.
Background of the Law
The table above briefly shows the flow of animal welfare related laws passed in Japan.
As mentioned in the comments on the front page, laws designed to protect animals were actually created rather recently, and until then, the purpose of the laws was only for the benefit of people.
At first, the concept of "animal welfare" was reserved for a few intellectuals, and only applied to cattle and horses. However, as the scope of protected animals expanded over time, the idea of animal welfare became more widespread among the people, leading to the current Animal Welfare and Management Law.
What is "Aigo"
In Japanese, the animal welfare and management law is called "doubutsuaigohou"(動物愛護法). The word "aigo" is divided into two by the ministry of the environment.
So in this point, the term "doubutsuaigo" is closer to the term animal welfare. In this site, we translated "doubutsu aigo" to animal welfare.
