Microchipping
Article 14: Supplementary Provisions September 5, 2012
The current law does not make microchipping mandatory, but the government must work to promote the use of microchips.
However, the Animal welafare and management Law was amended in June 2019, and from June 2022, when it comes into effect, microchipping will be mandatory for dog and cat sellers. Here is an introduction to the revised law on microchipping.
Part 1
Vendors who sell dogs and cats must install a microchip and register the information of the dog or cat. However, if you do not have a microchip installed in your pet dog or cat, try to install it as much as possible, although it is not mandatory.
Part 2
If you have acquired a dog or cat with a microchip, you must register the change.
Part 3
Microchipping of dogs is counted as one of the rabies prevention measures as a special exception.
Part 4
Each prefecture must campaign for microchipping of dogs and cats.
Part 5
The Minister of the Environment may designate an organization to carry out registration and other tasks.
