Initiative of AUTODESK
Programming education attracts people's attention. However, behind the popularity, the "3D-Modeling-Education" industry is on the rise. Turning your thoughts into reality, creating imagination. Autodesk is a company that tries to realize the goals, and we are sure Autodesk will be an important key to the romantic future.
Autodesk makes software, such as 3D CAD softwareCAD software is the acronym for "Computer Aided Design," a computer-designing tool., Fusion360, circuit board design software, EAGLE, etc., and provides car manufacturers and architects, CG, games, and infrastructure industries with its software.
We'll introduce some information regarding Autodesk's software.
Fusion 360
  • Suitable for any level, including beginners and advanced-level users.
  • Fusion360 has many kinds of functions.

  • CAM, CAD, CAE, PCB board and other functions.
  • Fusion 360 is helpful because most software doesn't have those functions.

  • Students can use the software for free.
  • Fusion360 allows students to acquire many things, such as 3D-Modeling skills.

Tinkercad
  • Visually easily understandable
  • We can create things by moving the shape.

  • We can use the software on a browser.
  • We don't have to install the software, but we can use it on a browserA browser is software used to view websites. Typical examples are Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome..

  • Provided for free
  • Elementary school students can use the software.

The common features of Fusion 360 and Tinkercad are that anyone can use them easily, and can make many kinds of things with the software. We asked Autodesk some questions about 3D printers.

Background of The Interview
We realized that when we were looking for companies to interview, we chose based on what objects they made. We changed the approach. We started to focus on 3D modeling software because we can never make objects without it. Accordingly, we interviewed Autodesk, which provides Fusion 360.

Online Interview

We interviewed Dr.Nakamura, who works for Autodesk as Education Account Manager. (August 16th)

  1. What do you think of the potential of 3D printers?
  2. There are still a few examples of introducing CAD into school. How do you popularize 3D model education using CAD?
  3. How do you remove the barrier to start 3DCAD?
  4. What will human resources be required in the future?
  5. How did you come to join Autodesk, Dr. Nakamura?
  6. Could you tell us about any software you recommend?

Q.1
What do you think of the potential of 3D printers?

A.1
It is exciting to be involved in developing software for 3D printers. The amazing part of using a 3D printer is that can "create" things they imagine. I can help those people, which makes me happy. I believe 3D printers have significant potential.

Q.2
There are still a few examples of introducing CAD into school. How do you popularize 3D model education using CAD?

A.2
Technical colleges and universities of science and technology have already introduced 3D-Modeling-Education. To be honest, I want elementary schools and junior high schools to teach it, too. We hope schools will include 3DCAD in "STEAMSTEAM education is an educational format and guideline that has become a hot topic in recent years, combining the five initials of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. STEAM education" is being promoted in various schools." just like they have introduced programming education.

We heard that you work as a part-time lecturer at Tokyo Institute of Technology. Are the students familiar with 3D printers?

Students in the science and engineering departments have many opportunities to use 3D printers. Many students in robot contestRobot contests are competitions in which robots are programmed to achieve certain goals and compete on the basis of scores and other factors. also learn 3DCAD. I think it is important for senior high school students to learn 3D CAD and 3D printers.

Q.3
How do you remove the barrier to start 3DCAD3DCAD is software for designing and drafting objects in three dimensions (three-dimensional) by using the x-, y-, and z-axes simultaneously.?

A.3
People themselves make a "barrier." Many people don't take the opportunity to learn new skills when they are not threatened or simply give up because they don't have the environment to do so. Overcome the "barrier" and start to use 3D Printing and Fusion360.

I'll tell you again, but it is better to start now, even when you feel a barrier.

In what way do you think 3D Modeling Education should be introduced into elementary school education?

I've heard some information about the introduction of 3D Modeling Education in elementary schools, but only a few cases. I hope use 3D Printing and Fusion360 near the future.

Q.4
What will human resources be required in the future?

Let me ask the same question. What kind of future making skill do you think will be in demand?

[Riku]
It is the person who can create new things by utilizing the 3D Printer’s features.
[Ryushin]
It's a person who can use a 3D printer for a specific purpose.
[Takahisa]
It's a person who can produce target things with a 3D printer.
[Yutaro]
I think it is a motivated person!

Thank you .
The answer is you, what you said. It's a person who tries to be an ideal person.

Q.5
How did you come to join Autodesk, Dr. Nakamura?

A.5
I majored in the Faculty of Product Design in college. Then, I worked for a company where we worked as a consultant for 3DCAD3DCAD is software for designing and drafting objects in three dimensions (three-dimensional) by using the x-, y-, and z-axes simultaneously. and 3D printers. I was interested in working for a startup, and I'm working at Autodesk.

I am an Education Account Manager here at Autodesk, working on providing students with free licenses around the world. As I was teaching at university as a part-time lecturer, I got interested in 3D modeling education.

Q.6
Could you tell us about any software you recommend?

A.6
I highly recommend Fusion 360 because it offers a wide variety of features such as CAMCAM is a function that creates numerical control programs, etc., necessary for machining with machine tools based on drawings designed with CAD., rendering, generative design, PCB design, etc., and, what is more, it manages the data in the cloudThe cloud is a feature that allows users to store and make their data available not on their own computers, but on a server somewhere in the world via the Internet.. Moreover, these features are free of charge for students.

We encourage anyone reading this article to take a “3D Modeling Journey" with Fusion 360.

After The Interview
What we learned from this interview is the potential of Fusion 360. We are also inspired by Autodesk's passion for developing its software for education. We would also like to contribute to 3D modeling education, and therefore we will create attractive websites where users can enjoy learning it.
